Pharmacology & Toxicology

Overview

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Guwahati was established on 16th September 2008 to contribute the fascinating and emerging area of pharmacological and toxicological sciences.

This department runs the Masters M.S (Pharm.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) programmes.

The Department is at the forefront of research into the effects of drugs (synthetics as well as natural phytochemicals) on biological systems with a view to understand the mechanisms on the human body. Pre-clinical research in the Department aims to examine cellular and molecular pathways in living systems as the first step towards drug development.

Facilities available in the Department

  • Full fledged cell culture lab for in vitro drug screening
  • Central Animal house facility according to CPCSEA norms for in vivo pharmacological screening including nude mice facility.
  • Gene Level Study (Equipped with PCR, RT-PCR etc)
  • Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamics study.
  • Plant Extraction and isolation facility (Soxhlet, Rotatory evaporator)
  • Proteomics (Western blotting etc)

Major Activities in the Department

  • Target identification and validation.
  • Hit finding and high throughput screening
